Midnight Magic by Avi . The characters are so poorly explained, and the mystery is so carelessly thrown out there, that it doesn't really qualify to be a book at all. The only reason I gave it more than one star is because I did really get hooked and wanted to find out what happened. You've got to give Avi some credit for that, I guess. So, the main character is this boy named Fabrizio, who is the servant to a magician named Mangus (who isn't really a magician, he just performs tricks with sleight of hand). I've got a few bones to pick with Fabrizio. But, before I start, let's take a look at the names in this book: Fabrizio, Pergamontio, Mangus, Teresina, Lorenzo, Scarazoni. I'm starting to think Avi gave the naming of his characters to a second grader. Hopefully the book is set in medieval Spain to atone for this, but there's nothing said about the setting, so.. I've got nothing against smart people, but this boy is incredibly wise. He is constantly quoting old sayings (a- n- n- o- y- i- n- g), and he manages to come up with solutions and ideas consistently and intelligently. He is much more advanced than Mangus, his master. Now, if this was a different book, and Fabrizio was a character who MADE SENSE, maybe I would be OK with that. Midnight Magic Baking – Cooking – Family – Health – Beauty. Midnight Magic - listen online, schedule, location, contact and broadcast information. Directed by George Mihalka. With James Wilder, Jennifer Dale, Stuart Gillard, Anthony Sherwood. He does whatever his master tells him, whatever the princess tells him, whatever the queen tells him, and basically has no will of his own. I kind of liked the princess Teresina, because she at least has some spunk, but she is such a weird and unexplained character that I can't say too much in her favor. For a main character, Fabrizio certainly doesn't add too much spark and excitingness to the story. To be honest, none of the characters are very good. Avi was too interested in the plot, and didn't pay enough attention to the people behind the mystery. As a result, there's a lot of potential that I can see with these characters, and they reach very little of it. Scarazoni is the bad guy, and as far as I can tell, he is the most cliched bad guy ever. He has no particular quality that might make him stand out from the other bad guys in other books. Still, he's got a good villainous name, and if he had been used correctly with the plot, I probably would've really liked him. The plot is yet another problem. At about page 1. 20, I could see what the ending was basically going to look like. I don't like books that cut the suspense early (and mystery/thriller books are supposed to have a lot of suspense, right?). There is also too much mystery at some points, and then all of a sudden the reader knows everything. When they all got together and basically gave the ending away, I nearly gasped for breath. My brain was just like, ! Don't tell me you just gave the whole plot away. You didn't give the plot away, right? Basically no point in finishing this book now. I know that this review was written quite sarcastically and scathingly, but.. I'm probably thinking too much about a book that I'll never read again. Whatever. Read on, bookworms!
